What is DoIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol)?

DoIP is an IP-based automotive diagnostic protocol. DoIP facilitates diagnostic-related communication between external test equipment and automotive control units (ECUs) using various transport protocols (IP, TCP and UDP). Since DoIP provides access to the vehicle's electronic components (ECU) over the Internet, it becomes possible to retrieve remote diagnostic data from the vehicle without requiring physical access to the vehicle. The DoIP stack acts as a gateway for all next generation Remote Vehicle Diagnostics applications. DoIP supports communication between a vehicle's on-board and off-board diagnostic systems. Compared to traditional CAN-based diagnostics, DoIP provides much faster data transfer rates at a low hardware cost.

How Does DoIP Provide Remote Vehicle Diagnostics?

DoIP provides remote vehicle diagnostic capabilities on all ECUs connected to it. It saves the cost and effort of individually integrating the DoIP protocol stack into each electronic control unit for the vehicle.

The diagnostic test tool is used because it sends diagnostic requests to the vehicle over Ethernet and receives a diagnostic response back.

The increasing connectivity of automobile parts with smart devices has transformed the next generation of cars into "computers on wheels". Unlike the traditional automotive network backbone of CAN buses, Ethernet is expected to replace them in the near future. The use of automotive Ethernet enables more efficient data transfer in today's and future cars as well.

       

The difference between UDS and CAN on IP

UDS over IP (LAN/WLAN):

UDS - application layer(ISO 14229-5).

DoIP - transport layer (ISO 13400-2).

Ethernet - physical layer(IEEE 802.3)

CAN via UDS:

UDS - application layer (ISO 14229-3).

CAN - transport layer (ISO 15765-2).

CAN - physical layerı (ISO 11898).

UDS on IP is more efficient than CAN Bus because it is less prone to errors in data format, can handle larger amounts of data and has a longer latency of data transmission.
