PIR Motion Sensor's power consumption is quite low, so you can use it to put your microcontroller to sleep by feeding the sensor. It is a digital output sensor.

General Specifications of PIR Motion Sensor

  • Logic Signal Output Level: 3.3 V
  • Operating Voltage: 5- 12 V
  • Dwell Time: 5- 200 Seconds
  • Detection Area: 3- 5 Meters
  • Detection Angle: 140º
  • Product Dimensions: 33x 25x 24 mm

PIR Sensors, you can easily use the module that should be in your room, which sends you and security units a warning alarm against thieves when you are not at home.

PIR Sensors are actively preferred in most modern security systems, automatic sensor lights used in apartment buildings, garage doors and some electrical devices.

When the sensor is idle, i.e. there is no movement within the sensor's range, both slots detect the same amount of infrared radiation, which gives an output signal of "0".

But when a warm creature, such as a person or animal, passes in front of the sensor, the sensor lights up with the increase of positive signals that cause a positive effect by detecting PIR Motion Sensor.

As in this example, when using a motion sensor with Arduino, it detects motion in the environment and causes it to transmit a signal to the unit to which it is connected.

You can easily choose it to detect when a person enters, leaves or approaches the area and for almost all of your Arduino projects.

The low power and low cost of the PIR Motion Sensor makes it a common choice. Its very robust structure, wide range of lenses and easy interfaces keep it among the most preferred ones.

PIR Motion Sensor Applications:

  • Security Systems
  • Intelligent Light Control Systems
  • Object Motion Detection

HC- SR501 PIR Sensor has three output pins. These are the VCC, OUT and GND pins. It has an internal voltage regulator, so you can operate it with any DC voltage between 4.5V and 12V, but typically 5V is used.

What the Pins on the HC- SR501 PIR Sensor Do;

VCC: is the HC- SR501 PIR Sensor to which we connect the 5 V pin on the Arduino.

OUT: is the 3.3 V output pin. LOW indicates no motion detected, HIGH indicates some motion detected.

GND: should be connected to the corresponding pin on the Arduino Uno R3.

PIR Motion Sensor has solder pads for two additional components on the circuit board. These may vary on some boards but are usually labeled RT and RL.

RT: This is for a thermistor or temperature sensitive resistor.

RL: This connection is for an LDR or Photoresistor.
